   PATIENTS' KNOWING-DOING GAP EXPOSED
Page 2

- DEBRIEF -

Some of the best health care professionals in the world are diabetes educators.

I can speak from personal experience as I got to know many of them in my sales work days. I have little hesitation in saying that because of their demanding accreditation levels, and I can assume the same standards are found in Hong Kong, they continue to be invaluable to patients suffering from diabetes. They are on the leading edge of behaviour change understanding.... (along with astute sales people). Yet even their endeavours they admit are sub-optimal. What chance for us mere business mortals with others in our organisations I wonder ?

This study has shown that many 'consumers' neither absorb critical information well nor act on it in sustained ways based on current learning methodologies. If people are not doing it in life critical situations why should we expect them to do it in the everyday corporate workplace where most KM practitioners serve ?

The number one message coming through from this study is ...customise... customise... customise... the information sources and the learning events that KM espouses... to the end-user.

Yes....it takes more development and maintenance time for your initiatives....but only in this way will knowledge workers personalise generic information being flooded to them by various sources.. to transform into action... skill... behaviour... "stuff"...performance. Closing the Knowing-Doing gap.

Hong Kong health care professionals are worried. The health budget is going to continue to skyrocket with these debilitating diseases without learning methodologies grounded also in psychology principles. The study is urging people to become people-smart.

Become people-smart. Study behaviour.

That is why the Emotional Intelligence trend you have started to read and see is partly about. In health care they have been calling it for years by another name used also here by these researchers - self-efficacy.

Bottom-line. If I ask your work colleagues whether you are a "people-person" what would they say of you ?

"Always has time for me....Helps me with MY issues...Encourages me even when I stuff up...Not narrow-minded...Not obsessed with their own agenda...."

OR

"Not very trusting... Seems always suspicious of things... Never declares his convictions... Critical of other's good work... Argumentative chronically... So task-focused... Wouldn't have a clue what my needs are."

Mmmmmm

Are you prepared to continually develop some basic psychology principles and practices ?Yes....particularly if you come from a IT/IM background ?

Why ? Because this study is shouting out that you primarily need this to maximise your chances of customising learning sources and events and help produce desired behaviours and performances !  One CEO rudely found this out in the twilight of his career, but he did something about it. Can you ?

Unfortunately the evidence to date is showing that neither line managers nor the support functions like HR,HRD/Training or IT are taking ANY responsibility for cultivating knowledge work (recent study). KM therefore has a very long way to go in its development in organisations before we see real productivity from enhanced knowledge work.

And if you don't think that humans learn in different ways then you need to visit a study that gives you the scientific proof you have been looking for......once and for all !

Are you an attitude changer rather
than an information deliverer ?

Knowledge-Doing Gap Closers will be much in demand.

This study has proven that even above-average motivated people do not change even when they know what to do. KM practitioners must show sound psychological practices behind their program initiatives to make an impression on what the organisation is paying them to do. I am more convinced of this than ever...

"But my 'KPI's' don't require me to do that stuff !!!!"

My reply ? Revise your KPIs with your manager !
Stop following... and start leading.
Take responsibility and do the right things !

"But I am not a naturally "people-smart" person !"

My response ? You have the capacity to be... because you too are...human ! And caring qualities can be learned... adequately. Yes... by you too !

Regretably most HR and Training professionals are not at all strong on psychological theory from my experience and from a myriad of anecdotes given to me by others. However, partner with them over lunch and workshop ideas together...continuously. Everyone wins if these essential partnerships are cultivated in KM.

Perhaps 'Dr Phil's' books might also be a good place to start !

But... whatever you do...      START... TODAY.
