INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT

I am speaking with Giovanni Schiuma of the University Basilicata in Italy. Giovanni, tell us about knowledge management, how do you see it ? What do you understand about it so far ?
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Well, what I think really about knowledge management is a way to leverage knowledge in order to improve the capabilities of an organisation to generate (results?) ... So all the processes of an organisation are based on capabilities, and capabilities are based on knowledge.

So knowledge management is a way to improve the capabilities of an organisation... of the people's, processes, and this in turn, the improvement of the results, the performance results of an organisation.

What do I think about knowledge management in the future, so called trends ?

I think now we are much more keen to look at the qualitative research to understand what is knowledge management or what are the knowledge management processes at the basis of knowledge management. But I am sure that in the future... tools and approaches... much more quantitative, can have the managers in driving the managing of the knowledge. So I think that the research and the future trends will be the developing of tools to support managers, in particular, tools that use information communication technology.

Today I was thinking... I have colleagues of mine who are working on learning... e-learning orginisations, using visual instruments, in particular satellite communication.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Video conferencing ?
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Video conferencing. But not just video conferencing. You can now also manage courses that are personalised. Because a video conference view is a way to overcome distance. But mainly you manage the conference at the same time. So...it is not a way to overcome the time (problem).

Instead, you can also organise and manage other kinds of courses that we can specialise, that you can use at home from your computer or from your television. So there are new frontiers that can be explored for information communication technology for use with knowledge management.

Definitely in the future will be... look to the tools to support knowledge management.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
And the metric system...measurement system, have you thought about that ?
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The measurement system is very, very important because... at present I am working in Cranfield School of Management, I mean, collaboration with Cranfield School of Management... and we are trying to develop tools and approaches to measure intellectual capital.

So... what are the knowledge assets within the organisation?
or that can be defined ? ...or that can be categorised so to develop taxonomy or intellectual capital ? And is it possible to measure all those kinds of intellectual capital in the organisation in order to provide a report of intellectual capital in the organisation ? And then... it is much more difficult to try and find the link between managing intellectual capital and the bottom line results. And that is another big challenge with the organisation.

Because if you are able to prove that investment in knowledge management translates into results in terms of bottom line then...
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Have you seen much of that in this point in time ?
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

We have developed some matrix, a framework, with another colleague of mine. And now we have started to test this model, even if we have to develop some case studies. And in particular, we are looking at two organisations that are working in business. So we develop a case study with (Likers ? Intershot?) that are companies that are working in England. So this is at present.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
So, you are optimistic about what knowledge management promises the organisational world out there ?
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I'm really optimistic. Yes.

But another important thing... I was thinking about this period...but something I would like to develop in the future research, is about emotion.

Because, until now, we have been speaking about knowledge management. But in the future, I am sure, we will start to speak about emotions management. That is the new frontier... because if we think... we started with data management, information management...today(at the conference) we had some in particular. And then knowledge management. But when we think about the individual - individual definitely knowledge but... there is other stuff that is much more important than knowledge, that is their emotion.

So, the emotion will be the next step, the next frontier research in my opinion that is related to wisdom. Because wisdom is something at the higher level compared with knowledge. So, that will be another step, very important.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Thank you.
