PROFESSOR
CONCEDES COMMUNITIES OF PRACTICE AS
GOLD STANDARD EXECUTIVE DEVELOPMENT

DEBRIEF -
Good
leadership is classed in advanced skills/attributes group. It is
hard to master. Any subject that is hard to master cannot be developed
from basic instructional techniques like didactic teaching. There
is a large amount of
tacit learning....the 80% hidden working knowledge stuff. It
has to be slowly developed from within...by INDUCTIVE LEARNING...EXPERIENTIAL
LEARNING. Yes?
SELF-DISCOVERY
LEARNING is what this professor advocates for the harder science
of social skills. It uncovers the underlying issues much better
than a textbook....or a KM database.
KM's
unique contribution to organisational effectiveness is providing
learning vehicles that develop key skill groups to advanced
levels. Communities of Practice (CoPs) face-to-face in combination
with on-line communities has been considered the gold standard for
personal and professional development and continuous improvement.
People learn best when they discover it themselves through a supportive
environment... often meaning structured peer-to-peer learning. Yes...
for factory-floor workers
too.
Can
a book help you through your eating disorder ? No...not nearly as
powerful as a structured community of practice as previously documented.
But
now a business professor has dared to challenge the status quo of
education methods proving that atleast for more complex subjects
requiring higher levels of tacit knowledge CoPs are proving the
way to go.
What
level of tacit knowledge are professional groups in your organisation
working at... and how are you assisting them to transfer some of
this knowledge to others ?
