AUSTRALIAN
HR EXPERTS DECLARING
KM GROWING ATLEAST IN IMPORTANCE
Tare,
M.(2003) A Future for Human Resources - A Specialised Role in Knowledge
Management. PhD Thesis, Swinburne University of Technology. Melbourne
Australia.
How
far is KM practice lagging from KM awareness in companies ? With
KM being now largely emphasised as needing Human Resources involvement,
is this happening ? One PhD researcher discovered some encouraging
signs but also gaping holes in KM involvement in Australia.
RESULTS
Current trends in KM understanding and usage in
36 Australian organisations was assessed.
Additionally, HR's current level of KM involvement was examined.
Although there is good growth in KM awareness and of its
importance, proper KM practice is occuring only in 11%
of companies. HR is making inroads in taking some
responsibility for KM's success.
METHOD
A Swinburne University
PhD researcher recently conducted a survey amongst Australian HR
managers on the subject of KM. A scientific method was used, declaring
four null hypotheses to undergo testing toward the sample group
of companies. A null hypothesis when proven true means that any
differences between examined factors are due to chance alone and
no other factor, meaning that there is no relation between the particular
factors tested.
Sample
: The 36 Australian companies surveyed had the following as
Employee Number sizes:
5,000+ (19%), 1000-4999(36%), 500-999 (25%), less than 500 (20%)
from Banking, Finance and Insurance mostly. HR Managers were surveyed
exclusively : 58 % Male, 56% PostGradQual, 61% under 45 years of
age,
86% less than 10 years in HR.
Responses : 5 possible answers per statement (Likert Scale)/Level
of importance(extremely important-5)/Level of Implementation(very
high level-5). Levels 4 and 5 ratings were combined per statement
as strongly affirmative responses in this review article. Multiple
sub-categories, 87 statements(items) in total. Some key items are
detailed under sub-categories along with the percentage of affirmative
responses for each one.
